CAREFREE

(Rural tableau)

A border of flowering broom
A golden sea gently undulating.
Carefree in the shade of an oak tree
Three cows stretched out on the grass
Ruminating greens and dreams
Now and again an ear is raised
Just like a fan
To flick away a fly
Sucking rheum in the corner of their eyes.

June 1967.
