HUMMING

I would rather hear
Things than people.
The sound of the fire hissing
The gander honking
In a howling wind,
Water gurgling in the stream
And the sluice-gate rumbling.
Far away I hear their humming
Like an echo coming
From the depths of centuries
The voices of my ancestors.
